Airbourne Aviation Announces New Ownership
The successful sale marks a new era for the flight training school.
Popham Airfield, Hampshire – 1st September 2025 – Airbourne Aviation, England’s longest-running flight school, has officially announced the successful completion of its sale to British Young Pilots founder Patrick Tame. This pivotal transaction marks a new chapter in Airbourne Aviation’s history, with the incoming owner pledging to secure the company’s legacy and ensure its status as an aviation institution for many generations to come.
A historic moment captured: Airbourne founder Mac Smith witnesses the contract, signed by Cliff Hawkins and new owner Patrick Tame.
Founded in 1980 by Mac Smith, Airbourne Aviation has grown from its humble beginnings as ‘The Microlight Aviation Club’ into a renowned and well-respected aviation training facility, recognised for its excellence in microlight instruction. In 2022, after a period of neglect and slow decline, the management of the school was taken over by passionate aviator Cliff Hawkins, who brought much needed new investment, ideas, and instructors to the organisation. Then in 2023, Cliff purchased the school, cementing its reputation as the most premier and trusted flight school in the country.
Airbourne Aviation’s new owner, Patrick Tame, is a rising figure in the UK aviation education and training scene. His business partner Dave Greenly joins him on his new venture, bringing a wealth of experience in flight training, operational management, and business development. Their collective experience and commitment to growth are expected to further enhance Airbourne Aviation’s position, opening up new business avenues and expanding its reach and impact to an even wider audience.
“Leading Airbourne Aviation over these last few years has been a tremendous privilege”, said previous owner Cliff Hawkins, “I’m really proud of where the school is today and I am confident that Patrick and Dave not only share my passion for aviation but also possess the expertise and vision necessary to guide the company to new heights – I look forward to witnessing Airbourne Aviation’s continued success”.
Airbourne Aviation’s management has reassured its employees and clients that the transition will be seamless, with no anticipated disruptions to ongoing operations, and have emphasised their appreciation for the expertise and dedication of the current team.

The new owner has signalled his intention to invest in advanced training technologies, including the expansion of the existing simulator capability. However, Mr Tame is keen to underline his commitment to upholding Airbourne Aviation’s core values. “We want to be clear that we’re here to oversee evolution, not revolution.”
“Airbourne is more than a school – it’s an institution, the spiritual home of microlighting in the UK. Dave and I both learnt to fly here ourselves – over the years we’ve made great friendships and happy memories at Popham Airfield, so to be offered the chance to take on this historic flight school was a no-brainer – we jumped at the opportunity!”
Dave Greenly added “We’re excited to be here, securing Airbourne’s legacy and making sure people remember what microlighting is all about - having fun!”
The buy-out deal finalised on 1st September 2025.
